Demographic changes and the need for modern schools

There is a lot of talk about demographic change in Sweden right now. Many conclude that because fewer children are being born, the need for new schools will decrease. But this analysis misses a crucial point: the real need is not just about pupil numbers, but about the quality and condition of the schools we already have.

Sweden’s population growth and the number of school pupils are not increasing at the rate previously predicted. At the same time, 65 per cent of Sweden’s schools are over 40 years old. Many of these were built in the 1960s and 1970s when major investments were made in school infrastructure. Since then, the pace of investment has slowed, while maintenance has often been poor. The result? A huge need for investment and a lack of modern, fit-for-purpose schools.

Social infrastructure

Given the global situation, we talk a lot about investing in infrastructure in Europe and Sweden. But it is important not to forget the social infrastructure in the form of schools. It is about creating the conditions for learning and prioritising children, they are our future. In a time of change, this is more important than ever.

Schools of the future

Today, we have completely different requirements for our learning environments than 40 or 50 years ago. To meet the needs of students and teachers, we need schools that are safe, flexible and adapted to modern pedagogy. At the same time, the right geographical location is crucial, schools need to be located where students live and where the need is greatest. Simply put, high quality and the right micro-location.

Lessons learnt from Germany

In Germany, where Hemsö also operates, we see a similar trend. Despite a declining population, investment needs in primary schools are estimated to be at least EUR 50 billion, clearly showing that even in areas with a declining population, the need to modernise school infrastructure remains.

– Building for the future is not just about following population trends – it’s about taking responsibility for the school environment we offer our children and young people. And that need is clear.

Our role at Hemsö

At Hemsö, we are well positioned to meet these needs. We invest in developing and managing modern schools in the right locations, with a focus on long-term sustainability and functionality. By partnering with municipalities and education stakeholders, we help create learning environments where both students and teachers can thrive and develop.

Let’s keep investing in educational facilities. Because when we equip our schools, we also equip the future.
