Campus Vasastan

From a sausage factory to a modern high school

Hemsö’s property Kadetten at Karlbergsvägen 77 in Stockholm has been converted into a modern high school campus – Campus Vasastan. A 12-year lease has been signed with AcadeMedia for the entire property.

The property is a former sausage factory that was previously used for, among other things, offices. It has now been converted into a modern school building. In the middle of the building, we have created a light garden which is a natural gathering point and the heart of the school. There is also a courtyard with an orangery. A new welcoming main entrance and new green spaces at the front have also been created.

Focus on sustainability

The project has had a major sustainability focus with reuse, recycling and high energy targets. The property’s rentable area currently amounts to approximately 11,400 square meters.

After a constructive and qualitative collaboration with Stockholm’s city planning office and Tengbom architects, a new detailed plan won legal force, which supports school goals in the long term.

The total area of the property is distributed over seven floors above ground, as well as basement and basement levels. Dining rooms and sports halls are also housed in the lower floors. Construction started in the first half of 2021 and the school received its first students in the fall semester of 2022.

When the project was completed, we also wanted to enliven the facade. Through our participation in the festival Wall Street Stockholm, we decided in collaboration with the tenant AcadeMedia on a mural painting.

Painting began in June 2022 and was completed in just a few days. Pilar Tolosa and Julían Facundo Razquin from Argentina – who sign their art Ciplope – have painted the wall.

In the film, Åsa Nordell Holmstrand, head of project development East, Hemsö, and the artists tell more about the choice of motif and what the artwork brings to the site.
