Nursing home in Essen

Hemsö is developing a new nursing and short-term care home with a lettable area of 6,000 square metres and 116 beds in the city of Essen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. A 20-year lease has been signed with DRK-Kreisverband Essen e. V., part of the German Red Cross. The investment amounts to EUR 22 million.

Estimated to be completed in spring 2026, the care home will accommodate 96 people in inpatient care and 20 people in short-term care. As well as providing a new home for people in need of care, it will also create an important employer that will strengthen the region in the long term.

DRK-Kreisverband Essen e.V. has been active in Essen for over 135 years. Like most local associations of the German Red Cross, the association in Essen is both a national relief organisation and an operator of social services such as nursing and elderly care.

– The project in Essen is one of several new construction projects that Hemsö is implementing in Germany. There is a great need for new social infrastructure in Germany, and we are pleased to contribute with much-needed new nursing home beds.

Jens Nagel, Head of Region Germany at Hemsö

The new nursing home will combine high living comfort with a focus on sustainability. The building will be equipped with a 20 kW solar cell facility and energy-efficient technology, making it an example of the energy-efficient care environments of the future.

Construction started in autumn 2024 and is expected to be completed in early 2026. The nursing home will be environmentally certified according to DGNB Silver.
