School meets nursing home in Gothenburg

Hemsö has developed a unique project with a primary school and a home for the elderly combined in one and the same building in the Sandarna area of Gothenburg. The school includes grades F-6 for 400 students and the nursing home 100 places. The investment amounts to approximately SEK 500 million. A 12-year lease has been signed with the city of Gothenburg for both the elementary school and the nursing home.

The property is located in the development area “Fixfabriken” in the Sandarna district in Gothenburg, where the plan is to build around 1,000 homes. The building is adjacent to Sannaparken with an elevated position in the area. The school for the 400 students is located on floors 1 – 3 of the building which also has a preparation kitchen, sports hall and garage. The retirement home with 100 places, is located on floors 4 – 8 with a view of Gothenburg’s harbor entrance and the greenery of the park.

The construction started in the summer of 2020 and occupancy was completed by the spring term of 2023.

Activities are underway in the building and it is gratifying to see the fine exchange between the school and the nursing home.

The design is expected to have positive effects as premises such as the cooking kitchen and sports hall can be used together, but also by creating meetings between the residents of the nursing home and the students at the school. Here there is an opportunity to improve older people’s proximity to life and movement, through both visual contact and joint activities between the operations. The children also get a close connection with the older generation.
