Long-awaited police station in Borlänge

A complex construction project that must meet several requirements: a modern office environment, high security where needed, and at the same time, an open and welcoming space for citizens.
The Swedish Police Authority has grown rapidly in recent years. In Borlänge, where the current police station was built in the mid-1970s, this has led to the organization being spread across different locations in the city. Additionally, the requirements for a functional police station have changed significantly over the past 50 years.
On February 16, 2024, the ceremonial groundbreaking for the new police station in Borlänge took place on a centrally located site between Maserhallen and Hagagymnasiet. The project has been carefully developed in close dialogue between Hemsö, the contractor SSEA, and the police in a collaborative working group.
Long-awaited
“Hemsö took the lead, and the working group has held monthly meetings throughout the project. Our focus has always been on the building’s functionality, in discussions with all affected employees, and together, we have sought the best solutions,” says Daniel Altersberg, project owner at the Swedish Police Authority.
“The new police station is highly anticipated by the employees,” says Oscar Brodin, an external project manager from Structor and a Borlänge resident himself.
“It will, of course, be a great improvement for the staff, but it is also a positive development for all of Borlänge,” he continues, highlighting that the police station is being built to meet the requirements for Miljöbyggnad Gold, a high environmental certification.
Flexible Spaces
The new police station will cover a total of 21,600 square meters, including modern office spaces – some of which will be activity-based – along with staff areas, detention facilities, and training rooms for employees.
“What the public will notice most is the reception area. We have put a lot of effort into creating a welcoming environment for citizens while ensuring privacy where needed,” says Oscar Brodin.

Daniel Altersberg, Group Manager Premises Supply Unit, Police Authority– We have planned for both organizational growth and the emergence of new needs.
“The premises are flexible and can be easily adapted,” says Daniel Altersberg, who will apply the experiences from Borlänge to future projects.
“Without going into details, we have learned a lot from this project that will benefit us in the future. It is clear that the collaborative contracting model has been a success.”
