Ryttersborg School

Hemsö has developed Ryttersborg School, a new primary and upper secondary school located in the Kristiansborg area near Mälardalen University in Västerås. The new school has space for approximately 860 students.

The school has two tenants – Västerås City with facilities for Carlforsska Gymnasium and Västerås Yrkeshögskola, as well as a secondary school for JENSEN Education. The lease agreements for the schools are signed for 15 years.

Adjacent to the school building, a green activity area has been established. During school hours, it serves as the playground for the secondary school students, and after school hours, it becomes a resource for students and the public.

The hexagon-shaped school, spanning three floors with a rooftop playground, has been designed based on the placement of surrounding roads. The school features exciting architecture with large classical design elements, including continuous bands of windows, a base made of reclaimed bricks, and an upper floor constructed with wood.

The school combines beautiful materials, purpose-built facilities and an impressive roof terrace overlooking Västerås Cathedral. Photo: Johan Eldrot

The column with a round base, resembling an ice cream stick, is another element where the material, in this case concrete, has created both form and function.

A characteristic detail of the school is the concrete pillar with the round foot called the ‘ice cream stick’. Photo: Johan Eldrot
