The South Building, Mälardalen University
Renovation with a focus on sustainability
Hemsö is collaborating with NCC on the construction of the South Building on the Västerås campus, with a strong focus on reuse and sustainability.
The project aims to become one of Sweden’s first to be certified as Miljöbyggnad Gold 4.0 – Refurbishment. Reuse and climate-smart material choices are central to the renovation. Examples include plasterboard, chipboard studs, insulation, ventilation units, paving slabs, courtyard trees and cable ladders.
The building comprises three storeys and a basement covering approximately 6,000 square metres. The S-building is to be adapted and converted into modern administrative office premises for Mälardalen University.
The university has entered into a 10-year lease agreement with Hemsö for the premises. In total, the university leases 40,000 square metres in Västerås from Hemsö.
Construction began in spring 2025 and the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
